However, what makes these babies better is that they are homemade with Fresh Milled Flour! And, Fresh Milled Flour means true whole wheat, and all the nutritional value that goes along with it. What Special Tools Will You Need?

Well, to make this task easier, I would recommend some donut pans. I have the ones in the picture, and they are amazing! They are the perfect size donut, not too big, and not too small. Also, I have not had a Donut stick to this pan yet, so that’s a huge win! Here is a link to that donut pan if you are interested.

I love these Donut Pans, and they are not too expensive. I prefer these metal pans to the silicone ones, because the silicone pans are more finicky, difficult to move around, and the hold odors unlike these.

More Helpful Tool Hints

Aside from the pan I mentioned, a piping bag is helpful to get a clean even donut. However, this is not a mandatory item, as you can just fill them as evenly as possible all the way around. But, the piping bag does make the job easier, and go smoother.

Also, I love to use fresh Nutmeg in this recipe, it is that secret ingredient that brings this donut flavor up a notch with a depth of nostalgic flavor. So, Whole Nutmeg & a zester would definitely come in handy!

What If I Don’t Have Buttermilk?

If you don’t have buttermilk, no problem, because there are many substitutes that will work in it’s place just fine for this powdered sugar donut recipe. So, Here are some Buttermilk alternatives that work great:

6 Dairy Buttermilk Substitutes

  • 1 cup of milk with 1 tsp of white vinegar
  • 1 cup of milk with 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 cup of milk with 1/2 tsp cream of tartar (my least favorite choice, you need to mix the cream of tartar in with the dry ingredients, not the milk for this option, so it doesn’t clump)
  • Plain yogurt or Greek yogurt
  • Sour Cream
  • Sourdough Starter

7 Non Dairy (Vegan) Buttermilk Substitutes

  • Pureed Tofu
  • Vegan Yogurt
  • Vegan Sour Cream
  • 1 cup of non dairy milk alternative to 1 TBSP Lemon juice
  • 1 cup non dairy milk alternative to 1 TBSP White Vinegar
  • 1 cup non dairy milk alternative to 1&1/2 tsp cream of tartar (my least favorite choice, you need to mix the cream of tartar in with the dry ingredients, not the milk for this option, so it doesn’t clump)
  • Sourdough Starter

Why Can’t I Just Use Milk Instead Of Buttermilk?

Buttermilk is an acidic ingredient. So, for the donuts to raise properly, the leavening agent, baking powder in this case, need an acid to react with. This is why we need to add something to the milk for this reaction to occur. So, Without an acid in the recipe, the donuts would end up dense and flat.
